Councilor Debora Coelho was first elected in 2005. She is a life long resident of New Bedford and is married to her husband Tony. She is a graduate of the New Bedford Public School System. At the age of 19, Debora became a successful businesswoman who sustained and grew her business in the city of New Bedford for the past 20 years. As a business and property owner she worked hard in building up her community, by making sure that all city services were met. She held accountability in all areas of local city government. Debora is fully committed to community, family and education. She is currently pursuing a higher education and has graduated in 2009 Magna Cum Laude from Bristol Community College with an Associates degree in Communications. She’s now attending Bridgewater State College working on her Bachelors Degree in Communications and Political Science.
Councilor Coelho’s history of commitment to New Bedford as a “volunteer” includes issues such as:
- Improving city sanitation and trash services
- Public Safety summits/Drug enforcement and gangs
- Vacant/Abandoned house issues/Slum landlords
- Graffiti cleanup
- Community Policing
- Domestic violence
- Riverside Park Project
- Neighborhood grants/Mural beautification projects
- PCB Environmental clean-ups/Illegal hazardous waste dumping
Councilor Coelho has served as:
- Vice President Neighborhoods United
- President of the Bullard Street Neighborhood Association
- Director North End Business Association
- Board member of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay
Councilor Coelho has been recognized as:
- The Standard Times Woman of the Year for New Bedford 2000
- North End Business Association Member of the Year
- Massachusetts State Portuguese Heritage Award
She has also graduated from:

- The New Bedford Citizens Police Academy
